Convenience Store

By: Keisha Parker Miller (aka) dawordartist

At the exact same moment of night

I was asking for Chunky Monkey,

he was paying his tab

A five-minute trip turned into eternity

The intersection just before the convenience store

Became the meeting place of two strangers who

Affected the rest of each other's life

Ice cream melts a stream

Of steamy crimson

If only

The cashier completed the transaction a little quicker

Or a little slower

If only

The streetlight had stayed red just a little longer

If only

He had taken a cab because the bartender

Confiscated his keys

But fate allowed their paths to cross

One ending on an off ramp to a highway

Never expected,

While the other path just ended

If only

I didn't want Chunky Monkey

Or he wasn't in the mood

If only

The convenience store wasn't so convenient.
